What if You Had One Year Left to Live? The Bucket List

Bucket List Poster

Kelly, from the hottest new blog on the scene, recently wrote a post based on the movie Bucket list. In it Jack Nicholson and Morgan (good casting me thinks) have 6 months to live and they create a ‘bucket list’: This is a list of things that they want to do before they ‘kick the bucket’ (die). I thought to myself, what would I do if this, the year 2008 was my last year to live. So below is my rather idiosyncratic ‘bucket list’ of things I would definitely get done (in truth, a lot of them I will eventually do…but I digress)

Bucket List Poster 2

1) Build my blog to the point that it’s my job and I no longer need to work: Imagine, I write, I reply to comments and I no longer have to have hand-to-hand combat with an alarm clock. Sigh!

2) Win or at least qualifying for a bodybuilding competition: It’ll depend on how the winner looks: if he looks like he eats steroids for breakfast, then qualifying is good enough.

3) Win a national and/or international hip hop dance competition: I am barely a dancer now. I am a pretty resourceful person and so I would love to know how I would get this done.

4) Become a public speaker to young African men: I know Carol, I should have already started. Soon and very soon….

5) Create my own clothing label and begin designing and retailing my own clothes: Clothes make the man, right? I want to be in full control of what I wear. Maybe make some change on the side….

6) Create my first ever movie and/or series (TV or radio): Ever since I saw the play ‘Lwanda’ I have always wanted to make a movie based on that play. I also absolutely loved BBC radio theatre when I heard it.

7) Travel home for many months and learn my native tongue: My mother is a Kikuyu from Rift Valley ( who speaks the more widely accepted version of Kikuyu) and my father is from Kirinyaga where they speak a type of Kikuyu that is grossly different from the norm. I want to learn both of them before I begin learning all languages in Kenya and then in Africa………..

I would love to see other people’s Bucket Lists, so Caustic, majonzi, gal africana, Sunny please share yours. My lovely readers, leave a comment below or write your own lists on your blog and link to mine and tell me what you would do before they put you six feet under (or cremate you or put you on a burning boat and set you out to the ocean or put you in a house for a week prior to digging a hole in the compound or……..:P )

Live like you will eventually die in every moment of your existence,

Mwangi

    Hey man,
nice list… I think you should just get started right away! πŸ™‚

Personally, I would just focus on making all the people around me happy. And of course keep on sharing my knowledge on my blog; and therefor help as many people as I possibly can.

  2. Mwangi says:

    Hey Alex,
I would love to see that list once it’s done! Please put it up on your blog so I can link to it.

  3. Evan says:

    It would be about books.

Get the illustrations done for my book on a christian physical spirituality.

Finish the free reports for my blog (one on health the other on living authentically).

Finish putting on line the elements of an acupuncture course and the way it should be taught. (The teaching of alernative health – in Australia at least – in my opinion is appallingly bad.

I would spend the time with my beloved and as much of it in Cairns as possible. It is the only place I know that I feel is spiritual for me.

  4. Mwangi says:

Hey Evan: That sounds so beautiful in terms of its depth and its simplicity. Whereas people such as myself are obsessed with amassing external experiences and external things what makes yours cool is you are going the opposite route; you are getting deeper into what you are already blessed with.
Come to think of it, I want a bit of that too: I would spend as much time as I can with my loved ones deepening our relationship and I would also spend a lot of moments in absolute silence simply appreciating life and waiting to hear the whispers from God.

I left my comment on your bucket list on Kelly’s blog. I’m working on mine…I’m in very intimidating company though so I’m shaking in my boots as I make it….I’m very serious about the cheering, sponsoring, acting and now I see that I can also model lol… ah I know all the right people/person!

  6. Mwangi says:

@gal: Where on Earth did you get a cheerleading outfit? Hey, if you don’t mind overtanned men in speedos and the commute to Melb….welcome and please be my guest. Can’t wait to see your list?

  7. gal africana says:

I was a cheerleader for a football team in Copenhagen (they gave us free gym membership in one of the best gyms, how could I resist???that’s my official excuse)…I’m working on it…

  8. Mwangi says:

@gal: Was it a high school football team or college? I guess I’ll be seeing you when the tanning salons are full of testosterone and when the banana hammocks (if you have ever heard a more ridiculous metaphor for a Speedo let me know) comes out of the attic.

  9. What a great list Mwangi. So diverse.
Good luck in your quest to realise those dreams, whether in 12 months or 12 years.

  10. Mwangi says:

Thank you so much Karen, hope I have inspired you to write your bucket list.

  11. gal africana says:

No it was a national lower league team…I found out their name after the first season was over…I was in it for the dancing and frills NOT for the football…for all I knew, we could have been cheering for chess players….
tanning, testosterone and banana hammocks??? those words sound impossibly wrong when used in the same sentence! lol

  12. Tom Stine says:

I think I would spend almost all my time with my son. I would probably toss him and some stuff in my truck, hit the highway, and work our way around the US for a couple of months, seeing all the National Parks I’ve never seen, visiting friends and family, and listening to him talk about Pokemon incessantly. That would be perfecto!

  13. Mwangi says:

@Tom: Yet another beautiful, simple, profound bucket list. You guys are really making me rethink my original bucket list.

  14. gal africana says:

    The BL is done!

  15. Kelly says:

Beautiful post. I’m not sure my blog qualifies to be the hottest, but well….
I’m thinking, if all these bucket lists get done, some difference will have been made in the world.

  16. Mwangi says:

@gal africana: The big moment has finally arrived…..the anticipation is building…..drumroll please…..see you on your comments section

  17. Mwangi says:

@Kelly: Me thinks so and me hopes so to. It’s absolutely amazing the depth of experience that some people would go for if this were their last year. I feel like such a superficial person after reading the BLs of guys like Tom and Evan….beautiful and deep!

  18. Kelly says:

We ought to go back on the drawing board and do a real bucket list. The one we did was more fun than anything else. See you on second edition.

  19. Mwangi says:

@Kelly: Let’s see what you can come up with πŸ™‚

  20. Sunny says:

    My bucket list:

I would love to mentor young Kenyan girls. I have been so blessed so far, and have so much to share. I hope that I can leave them something tangible to carry over into the adult years.

Teach entrepreneurship skills to people who cannot afford them. Many of us reading this post can access these services, at low or no cost, so why not pass them on too?

    Learn how to drive.

More later: Look for ‘sunnykay’ at listofbests.com where I have begun my list.

  21. Mwangi says:

@Sunny: You and I pretty much see eye to eye to eye on what we want to do with our lives with the key word being EDUCATION! That will truly change the world in my opinion.
I went to that site and it looks like it’s just a spam site; you probably sent the wrong link.

  22. Chiira says:

Now that is a wonderful bucket list.just go ahead and be done with it.

  23. Mwangi says:

@Chiira: Watch this space my friend. I intend on getting some of that stuff done ASAP

  24. liberiangirl says:

I do not have a blog( my life is not that exciting)..but I would:

    1. spend alot of time with my family and friends
    2. take trips all over
3.have the best sex i can have πŸ™‚
    4.settle my finances(what little i have)
    5. Just be happy I am alive for the time being.

  25. Mwangi says:

@liberiangirl: I must say all that stuff appears extremely doable in the here and in the now, so let me suggest that you begin knocking them off one by one over the next couple of weeks because it’s a great list and it’s a shame not to live it when it appears, to me anyway, to be within your grasp.

  26. liberiangirl says:

    Indeed you are right!

  27. Enjoy every second, no one actually knows when are time is due.
Live every day as it your last, and laugh as much as possible.
    Life is short people.
